A different type of storm has been brewing at the Tamworth Regional Youth Centre with members of the Tamworth Regional Youth Council preparing for the opening of a community pop-up café this Saturday (31 October, 2020).
The Grub Hub will open from 12pm until 7pm, and will be run by volunteers from the Tamworth Regional Youth Council.
The café will operate as a takeaway service only on the last Saturday of each month.
All profits will go towards further training opportunities for young people.
Tamworth Regional Council Volunteer Services Coordinator Veronica Filby said the youth council have put in lots of hard work into the café project.
"The youth council members are all certified in safe food hygiene controls after completing a Food Handling Level One Certificate from Tamworth Community College," she said.
"They also took part in a workshop with chef and author Paul West to learn how to make simple, hearty and nutritious meals.
"On the menu at the café is a range of items priced under $10 including hot dogs, nachos and smoothies."
"We are working towards making Grub Hub cafe as sustainable as possible," said Mrs Filby.
"All takeaway packaging will be recyclable or biodegradable and, where possible, we have sourced food locally to minimize our carbon footprint."
Helping young people gain employment has been focus area for the current Tamworth Regional Youth Council.
"Our volunteers will get the opportunity to learn and practice important skills in hospitality and teamwork, and be able to add this experience to their resume when searching for jobs in the future," she said.
"We are looking forward to seeing this project grow in the future."
Grub Hub pop-up café is funded by the NSW Government under a grant from the Youth Opportunities program.
Tamworth Regional Youth Centre is in Quinn Street, West Tamworth.
