$75M Boost for South Hedland Housing Project

  • Cook Labor Government to invest more than $75 million to boost housing supply in South Hedland
  • 121 lots to be created in new Western Edge residential development
  • Investment part of Cook Labor Government's focus on ensuring every Western Australian has a place to call home

The Cook Labor Government will invest $75.2 million to deliver a new residential development in South Hedland, bolstering housing supply in a key regional centre.

The investment in the 2026-27 State Budget will enable the Cook Labor Government, through DevelopmentWA, to create 121 lots within the first two stages of the Western Edge project.

It includes funding for enabling infrastructure such as water, power, and telecommunication connections, as well as public open space.

Western Edge has the potential to deliver up to 1,000 lots into the future, including up to 120 social homes over the life of the project.

Subdivision approval is already in place for the first stage, with Stage 2 planning underway. Stage 1 construction is expected to commence by mid-2027, with Stage 2 construction to follow.

As stated by Planning and Lands Minister John Carey:

"The Cook Labor Government wants to ensure more housing opportunities for first homebuyers and families in Port Hedland and this new residential development will provide a significant boost to local housing supply.

"It's part of a record housing spend, including investments in this year's budget to unlock land for new homes in regional Western Australia."

As stated by Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson:

"This investment demonstrates how the Cook Labor Government is laying solid foundations for our regional centres.

"This project will not only increase housing availability in South Hedland but also support growth in the Pilbara, supporting those who work and live in the region."

As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

"The Cook Labor Government is delivering new residential estates across the Pilbara including this development in South Hedland and the Mulataga residential development in Karratha.

"It's part of a continued focus on ensuring more people across the Pilbara have a place to call home.

"Western Edge will be a serviced and well-planned estate with diverse housing opportunities and plenty of open space for the community to enjoy."
