Noted French philosopher and distinguished visiting professor in the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy Professor Claude Romano has been awarded the Grand Prix de Philosophie.
Awarded by the prestigious Académie Française, the Grand Prix is regarded as the highest award for a philosopher in France, the centre of European philosophy. Past recipients include such illustrious figures as Emmanuel Levinas (1990), Paul Ricœur (1991), Gilles Deleuze (1994), René Girard (1996), Jean-Luc Marion (1992), Vincent Descombes (2005) and Jacques Bouveresse (2019).
Unlike many other academic prizes that honour a specific contribution such as an essay or a monograph, the Grand Prix acknowledges the distinctive contribution which the entire oeuvre of the chosen academic has made to the field.
Professor Romano has been honoured at a relatively early stage in his career, making the achievement all the more notable.
Professor Romano acknowledged the support of ACU for his work, saying he is "very proud to share the honour with members of the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy at ACU who accorded support and trust in my work".
Professor Dermot Nestor, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy said, "The faculty is delighted for our friend and colleague Professor Romano and congratulates him on his receipt of this most significant honour."
Professor Romano will continue his collaboration with the Faculty and the Institute for Religion and Critical Inquiry in 2021 and beyond.
