Congratulations to ASM members Julie Segre and Arturo Casadevall for being elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). On May 3, 2022, NAS announced the election of 120 members and 30 international members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Those elected today bring the total number of active members to 2,512 and the total number of international members to 517.

Dr. Julie Segre is a Board member of ASM. She studies the microbial diversity of human skin in healthy individuals and that found in disorders such as eczema. She also examines the integration of genomic methodologies into hospital epidemiology to investigate healthcare-associated outbreaks of multi-drug resistant bacteria. Dr. Segre is the chief and senior investigator of the National Human Genome Research Institute's Translational and Functional Genomics Branch.
Dr. Arturo Casadevall is Chair of the American Academy of Microbiology's Governors at ASM. Dr. Casadevall's research focuses on host defense mechanisms, how fungi cause disease and the development of antibody-based therapies for infectious diseases. He is a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and holds a joint appointment in molecular microbiology and immunology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
They will join the National Academy of Sciences for their pioneering research that supports academy's mission of "shaping health research, practice and policies that improve the lives of millions of people around the world."
