Liverpool City Councillors this week unanimously endorsed a 10-year plan to enhance the growing Liverpool city centre and provide benefits for decades to come.
"The Liverpool City Centre Public Domain Master Plan is Council's 10-year vision to guide the development of public space and pave the way to a greener, more vibrant and active city centre while fostering an 18-hour economy," Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said.
"Wider footpaths, dedicated cycleways, more street trees and vegetation, public art, better furniture, pedestrian lighting and new paving materials are among the improvements suggested in the plan that will improve accessibility and amenity for people from all walks of life."
The plan provides a cohesive approach to development in the city centre and a useful set of standards for Council, private developers and local businesses, with 76 Council projects in the pipeline to provide meaningful work during construction.
"The 76 Council projects highlighted in this plan will super-charge our fast-growing city centre, ensuring it remains a great place to live, work, invest, study and visit," Mayor Waller said.
"Over the next 12 months, we'll be planting 245 mature trees and upgrading pavements along many well-used city centre streets.
"A number of Council's capital work projects highlighted in the plan, such as the upgrade to Railway Street, the Brickmakers Creek Master Plan and Light Horse Park Master Plan, are on-track and progressing through the design stage.
"Council has also begun to benchmark Development Applications against the plan's design standards to ensure they are cohesive with our vision for Sydney's third CBD."
City centre enhancements to be unveiled over the next 12 months include:
- Planting of mature trees and installation of new granite pavements along Memorial Ave, Elizabeth, Bigge, George, Northumberland and Bathurst streets;
- Planting of mature trees in Bigge Park, Pioneers Memorial Rest Park and Hart Park;
- Implementation of Railway Serviceway tactical urbanism (low-cost, temporary changes to public spaces) project to boost foot traffic and vibrancy, with new line markings, giant potted trees, shade umbrellas and seating; and
- Roll out of additional tactical urbanism projects across other locations, which include giant potted plants and pedestrian orientated improvements.
Developed after extensive consultation with the community, government agencies and businesses, the master plan provides a list of the public infrastructure to best support the vibrant economy of Sydney's third CBD as Liverpool attracts more residents, workers and visitors.
The plan has been named a finalist in the 2020 Local Government Excellence Awards in the category of Community Partnerships and Collaboration.
