Calling All Citizen Scientists For Bioblitz Event

Discover and help protect the abundance of life that wiggles, scutters, blooms and grows at Croom Reserve with the Shellharbour City Council BioBlitz event.

BioBlitz is a unique and collaborative citizen science initiative aimed at promoting environmental awareness and community engagement in biodiversity conservation.

The event will be held on November 10 and 11 at Croom Reserve, Albion Park Rail (meet at John O'Dwyer Oval).

BioBlitz brings together scientists, naturalists, and the local community to explore the area and record its rich biodiversity using the iNaturalist and FrogID citizen science apps.

Collaborating with experts from the University of Wollongong, Lodge Environmental, TAFE NSW, and Growing Illawarra Natives, Shellharbour City Council's Environment Team will guide participants through morning, afternoon, dusk, and evening sessions, providing invaluable insights into the diverse species inhabiting the region.

During the event, participants will have the opportunity to contribute to the scientific community's understanding of the local ecosystem while gaining hands-on experience in biodiversity identification and data collection.

With a focus on education and environmental stewardship, BioBlitz encourages a sense of shared responsibility among the community, emphasising the importance of active participation in preserving the region's natural treasures.

Mayor Chris Homer said BioBlitz was a wonderful opportunity for the community to actively participate in the documentation and preservation of the local ecosystem.

"This event is yet another example of Council's commitment to protecting and preserving the natural heritage of Shellharbour City," Mayor Homer said.

"By fostering a collaborative environment where experts and community members work together, we can create a meaningful impact on the conservation efforts within our region."

Shellharbour City Council held its first BioBlitz for Global Citizen Science Month in April 2021 featuring more than 50 participants. It proved to be extremely popular, with the event booking out.

Council plans to hold two BioBlitz events each year, one in autumn and one in spring.
