Canada Announces Nearly $2 Million in Funding for Projects to Adopt Clean Tech in Quebec's Fisheries

From: Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Backgrounder

Overview

The Fisheries and Aquaculture Clean Technologies Adoption Program is a federal initiative that encourages the adoption of green technologies in the fishing and aquaculture industry. The program provides $20 million over four years to help Canadian businesses adopt new, clean technologies into their operations.

This latest funding of nearly $2 million represents a significant investment from the federal government, along with additional funding from the Government of Quebec, in creating a greener, more ecologically friendly fisheries and aquaculture industry in Quebec.

RecipientProject objectiveLocation DFO contribution ($)Provincial Ministry
Pêcheries Yan BourdagesSupport the acquisition of a selectivity device in the redfish fishery to exclude flatfish and juvenile fish, thereby reducing by-catch. The project will use twin trawls instead of a single trawl, reducing fuel consumption by 50% during the trial period. The use of twin trawls in the fishery will also reduce trips to sea and thus reduce fuel consumption by 20% and reduce seabed disturbance.Gaspésie41 000 Ministry of Economy and Innovation
Les Crabiers du Nord Inc.Support the improvement of the thermal process when packaging products. Installation of a Lagarde autoclave will reduce the amount of steam needed to sterilize or pasteurize the products. There is, therefore, lower energy demand, which means lower propane consumption. This device also uses water in a closed circuit, which reduces water use during cooling cycles and allows heat recovery through a plate heat exchanger system.Côte-Nord224 495 Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
Council of the Innu First Nation of NutashkuanSupport the reduction of the environmental impact of two fishing vessels of the Council of the Innu First Nation of Nutashkuan. The first vessel will replace its engine and exhaust system with a next-generation engine, a fuel management system, and a particle filtration system. The second vessel, which already has a next-generation engine, will have these same systems installed. In addition, both vessels will use mineral oil instead of synthetic oil in the hydraulic system; this will limit any risk of leakage that could be harmful to the environment.Côte-Nord364 040Secrétariat aux affaires autochtones
Clément Samuel (Samuel Normand)Support the purchase of spacer panels and deployment monitoring sensors. The new Exocet panels will reduce fuel consumption by reducing fishing gear drag. The MARPORT monitoring system will allow the company to reduce trawling time while preventing pulling a trawl that may not be open, and to monitor the filling of the trawl in order to haul it back when it is full. This system will also reduce the trawl impact on the seabed by reducing how long the panels are in contact with it. This equipment will be used by the company for shrimp fishing operations and for a Merinov pilot project to test redfish fishing gear.Gaspésie217 924Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
Pêcheries Luc CoutureThe project aims to increase the overall energy efficiency of the company's lobster fishing vessel by completely modernizing the vessel's propulsion system. The acquisition of a new-generation engine, a new transmission, exhaust line and high-efficiency propeller specially designed to perfectly match the shape of the hull will allow the company to reduce the vessel's fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the acquisition of a MARENTRACK © monitoring system, which includes all the software and sensors for data collection, will allow the captain to obtain precise data on the operation of the boat and to adapt his conduct for better energy efficiency of the vessel. C.D. Pêche Inc.The project aims to increase the overall energy efficiency of the company's snow crab fishing vessel by completely modernizing the vessel's propulsion system. The acquisition of a new-generation engine, a new transmission, exhaust line and high-efficiency propeller specially designed to perfectly match the shape of the hull will allow the company to reduce the boat's fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Aquaculture Gaspésie Inc.Aquaculture Gaspésie aims to improve the efficiency of the treatment of fish farm waste by installing an innovative filtration system at key points in the system. This system combined with water recirculation and ozone dosing stations will allow the company to address three main issues: improved recovery and filtration of fine particles affecting the quality of the farm water, phosphorus recovery and sludge concentration.Gaspésie787 778Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food
