Rapid assessment of concussion, autonomous submarine robots and satellite navigation systems are among the benefits of 20 standout finalists in Curtin University's 2026 Curtinnovation Awards.
The annual awards recognise Curtin-led innovations with the potential to have real-world impact, with past winners including a native seaweed solution to chronic inflammation, a medical imaging solution for surgeons treating congenital heart defects and a breakthrough in synthetic graphite production for lithium-ion batteries.
Selected from a competitive field, this year's finalists span a diverse range of sectors including health, artificial intelligence, sustainability, agriculture and more.
Curtin University Executive Director of Commercialisation Rohan McDougall said the breadth of submissions highlighted the University's growing strength in translating research into real-world solutions.
"This year's Curtinnovation Awards attracted an impressive range of ideas, showcasing Curtin's ability to turn ideas into practical innovations," Mr McDougall said.
"These awards are more than recognition - they provide a valuable platform to connect our innovators with industry, investors and partners in Western Australia and beyond."
Curtin University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research Professor Melinda Fitzgerald congratulated the finalists for their work.
"From improving patient care to creating more sustainable industries, these finalists demonstrate the depth of talent and creativity across our University," Professor Fitzgerald said.
"The Curtinnovation Awards celebrate the people and ideas helping to solve everyday challenges and I look forward to seeing how these innovations progress in the years ahead."
Among the finalists this year is TBIScan, a portable device that uses brain activity to provide rapid and objective concussion assessment to support faster decision-making in clinical and sporting settings.
Also shortlisted is Argus, a real-time sensing platform designed to predict and prevent collision risks in underground mining environments, helping to improve safety for workers.
Another finalist, Velora, is a wearable breastfeeding monitor that tracks milk intake and provides feeding insights through a connected app, helping parents better understand feeding patterns.
