Delivering correctional infrastructure Tasmania needs

Elise Archer,Attorney-General and Minister for Corrections

The Tasmanian Government has a strong plan to invest more than $350 million in Tasmania's prison infrastructure, modernising existing facilities while also addressing future capacity.

This plan will deliver substantial jobs, provide a major economic stimulus and support Tasmania's building and construction sector.

A key part of this prison infrastructure plan is our commitment to build the $270 million Northern Regional Prison.

This vital project alone will support more than 1000 jobs and deliver an economic boost of $500 million to the region according to the recently completed and independently conducted Social and Economic Impacts Study.

Following community consultation we have identified a new site for the Northern Regional Prison, and we are committed to delivering this project in an effective and timely manner.

I am pleased to confirm the expected timeframe for Stage 1 of the Northern Regional Prison will be:

  • July 2020 – Tasmanian Government finalises due diligence on Crown Land site at Brushy Rivulet on Birralee Road;
  • August 2020 – The Government begins development of the masterplan and Particular Planning Zone (PPZ) assessment including required consultation;
  • December 2020 - Planning application submitted;
  • March 2021 – Design and tendering begins;
  • Early 2022 – Construction works begin on Stage 1; and
  • 2025 - Opening of Tasmania's Northern Regional Prison Stage 1.

This timeframe will provide further confidence to the local building and construction sector, with key milestones outlined for works.
