Digital Literacy Sessions Empower Residents Online

Ararat Rural City Council has announced a new schedule of digital literacy support sessions through Ararat Library, providing residents with free, one-on-one assistance and small group learning opportunities.

Council's Digital Literacy Support Officer, Moya, offers patient, practical guidance to help residents navigate everyday technology. From setting up a new phone, tablet, or laptop, to accessing services such as MyGov, the VicRoads app, and VicEmergency, the sessions are designed to build confidence and reduce stress around using digital devices.

Mayor Cr Bob Sanders said the program responds to a growing need for support as more services move online. "Great connectivity can bring great quality of life, such as being able to chat with family members, access the TV, movies, radio, and podcasts you enjoy, learn new skills, and stay on top of the technology that supports everyday life," Cr Sanders said. "We're proud to have Moya supporting our community in Ararat and across our townships, helping people feel more comfortable and capable when using digital tools."

Residents are increasingly expected to complete everyday tasks online, including paying bills, booking appointments, and accessing government services. For many, multi-step processes such as two-factor authentication, verification systems, and online portals can be difficult to navigate. Others may be using older devices that no longer support current applications, or feel unsure about how to use newer technology safely.

Moya can assist with:

• Setting up and learning to use phones, tablets, and laptops.

• Accessing and navigating MyGov and other government services.

• Installing and using apps such as VicEmergency and library eResources.

• Advice on upgrading or replacing outdated devices.

• Building confidence to explore and use technology independently.

In addition to one-on-one support, computer classes are available for residents who want to develop longer-term digital skills.

Sessions are available at Ararat Library on most Mondays and Tuesdays throughout July, with bookings recommended.

Moya also visits some of our key townships for drop-in support sessions:

• Willaura: first and third Wednesdays each month, 10am-12pm

• Elmhurst: first and third Thursdays each month, 2pm-4pm

• Lake Bolac: second and fourth Wednesdays each month, 10am-12pm

• Pomonal: second and fourth Thursdays each month, 10am-12pm

Council has also confirmed a new township drop-in location at Gorrin Village, with sessions to be held in the independent living area on the third Tuesday of each month.

Fortnightly computer classes are also held in Streatham from Friday 10 July, 1pm to 3pm, with a maximum of five participants per session. There is no class on 24 July, and bookings are required.

All sessions are free of charge.
