Easy alfresco dining still on cards for local businesses

Townsville could soon be enjoying more alfresco dining options with Townsville City Council set to make applying for outdoor dining free and easy in response to COVID-19 restrictions.

A new process is being designed which will provide a quick, easy and free way for Townsville's food and beverage businesses to extend their footprint onto the path.

Increasing the floor space of a business will increase the amount of customers that can dine in while COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

TaskforceNQ chair Jenny Hill said the expanded alfresco dining is one way Council can help businesses struggling with the State Government restrictions on social distancing.

"Our hospitality industry has been hit hard by the COVID-19 restrictions that were put in place to protect the community, but now that these restrictions are starting to ease it's important that we look for ways to support our local businesses," Cr Hill said.

"By expanding the floor space available to restaurants and cafes, we're providing more space to abide by social distancing and seat additional customers when safe to do so.

"We're hopeful to have the application process ready soon and are looking forward to seeing the new-look dining in action, taking advantage of Townsville's winter weather and environment."

Applications for alfresco dining will be valid for a 3-month period and will be reviewed after that.

Restaurants and cafes will still be expected to abide by all food and safety regulations, insurances and liquor licensing.
