Failed to comply with a direction charges

A 49-year-old man has been arrested, charged and refused bail after failing to comply with a COVID quarantine direction upon arriving in Western Australia.

The man arrived at Perth Airport on Wednesday 23 June 2021 on a flight from Victoria and was issued a direction to self-quarantine for 14 days at a suitable premises.

Police conducted a self-quarantine check on 24 June 2021 and it will be alleged the accused was not present at the time of the check.

Inquiries were conducted and the man was subsequently arrested in Fremantle later that day.

It will be alleged the man conducted a motivational speech in Rockingham on 23 June 2021, and planned to conduct further speeches in Fremantle on 24 and 25 June 2021.

Further inquiries were conducted and it was ascertained the man allegedly provided false information about where he had been in the previous 14-day period prior to entering WA. Police will allege the man had been in New South Wales and Queensland in the 14-days prior to his arrival in WA.

The 49-year-old man from Victoria has been charged with:-

• Two counts of Failed to comply with a direction and;

• One count of Gave false or misleading information.

The man has been remanded in custody to next appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on 23 July 2021.

The WA Police Force has provided details of the arrest and the speaking event to the Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC) to review any potential health risk and provide any required advice.
