Final rules solidify patient protections in No Surprises Act

American Heart Association

The No Surprises Act, which went into effect Jan. 1, brings relief from financially devastating surprise medical bills to millions of patients across the country. The American Heart Association, the world's leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health, issued the following statement in response to the release of the final rules for the law's implementation:

"Today marks a critical point in the fight to end the most egregious surprise medical bills. The No Surprises Act has now been in effect for more than seven months, and these final rules solidify the bipartisan law's robust safeguards for patients and consumers nationwide.

"Patients suffering from cardiac arrest, heart attack or stroke should be able to focus on their health rather than worry about the financial costs that may result from unexpected medical care. These rules ensure the law will protect patients from the financial devastation that surprise bills can cause and ensure they are no longer caught in the middle of payment disputes.

"The American Heart Association and patient advocates across the country commend the continued leadership and strong support from federal lawmakers for the No Surprises Act. We urge the White House and Congress to support critical efforts to educate the public about their rights under this landmark new law."
