Golden garden to celebrate 50 years - Wollongong

Wollongong Botanic Garden will celebrate 50 years of opening to the public on Saturday 2 January 2021.

To mark this key occasion, the Garden has planned a year of birthday celebrations for the community. The festivities will kick off with the street music talent of HONK! performing in the Garden on 2 January from 2pm in a picnic-style event. Along with the music, enjoy a delicious bite from the food truck, or pack your own picnic. Visitors can conclude the festive day with a Sunset Cinema screening, with tickets available for purchase online.

Sunday will be another day of smooth tunes and tasty food, with Sunday Sounds returning to the Botanic Garden for another season. Each Sunday will feature a new artist on the Mercury Lawn for the community to enjoy free of charge.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said the Wollongong Botanic Garden is a jewel in the heart of Wollongong and something for our community to be extremely proud of.

"The golden jubilee in 2021 will see a yearlong celebration of events, activities and workshops to showcase, teach and inspire our visitors to connect with the Botanic Garden and to mark this significant milestone."

"The Garden also continues to be a sanctuary for people to escape the everyday, exercise, celebrate, enjoy nature and improve their mental health and wellbeing.

"It's an important public space for the community, especially during these challenging times. The Garden attracts more than 500,000 visitors each year who admire the beauty of the Garden's range of native and exotic plant collections. In addition to this, the Garden also plays a significant role in conservation and protection of plant species and diversity.''

Some of the featured events planned include:

* Sunset Cinema: 17 December 2020 to 28 February 2021
