Hazard Reduction operation at Paupong Nature Reserve

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning three hazard reduction operations in coming days, with the first being in Paupong Nature Reserve, on Sunday 20 February 2022 weather permitting.

Staff from Metro South West and Blue Mountains regions undertaking the Pisgah Ridge Hazard Reduction burn, near Glenbrook in the Blue Mountains National Park.

"The 850-hectare treatment is approximately 15 kilometres to the south-east of Jindabyne," said Tristan Ricketson, Snowy River Area Manager at NPWS.

"Additionally, on Monday 21 February 2022 NPWS will work with the Rural Fire Service on a 1,500-hectare treatment in Merriangaah north near Merriangaah Nature Reserve, designed to protect properties neighbouring the reserve," Mr Ricketson said.

"A separate 3,000-hectare treatment at Rennix is also planned for Wednesday 23 February 2022, which is approximately 10 kilometres to the north-west of Jindabyne. This operation is designed to help protect some of the tourism facilities within Kosciuszko National Park, the township of Jindabyne and other neighbours of the park," he said.

"These strategic operations are part of a proposed 20 -treatment program by NPWS over autumn in the southern ranges. These three activities will help to limit the potential spread of wildfire to surrounding private properties and to protect park assets from fire impacts."

"Residents and visitors are reminded to drive to conditions and observe any warning signs or directions from fire crews. Warning signs will be in place in the area."

"Smoke from the treatment may be visible throughout the Monaro region for a number of days."

"We thank our neighbours for their understanding."

"People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors."

These activities are part of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service.

This hazard reduction treatment is part of the NSW Government's $76 million package over six years to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in the State's national parks, where conditions allow.
