International education initiatives expand in India

  • Western Australian curriculum recognition in India set to grow international education sector
  • School Curriculum and Standards Authority to promote Western Australian senior secondary studies in Indian schools
  • Collaboration will support the State's international education strategy

International Education Minister David Templeman has confirmed today the School Curriculum and Standards Authority has been granted equivalence approval for the Western Australian Curriculum in India.

This significant achievement will assist with the promotion of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) in India, which will support students pursuing tertiary or training opportunities in WA post-Year 12.

The equivalence process, managed through invitation by the Association of Indian Universities, has determined that the WACE is equivalent to India's senior secondary certificate of education.

The WACE aligns with India's National Education Policy, which will provide assurance to Indian schools seeking an alternative senior secondary pathway for the students.

Students in India who complete the WACE will be afforded a seamless application process for the university or training sector in WA.

The McGowan Government trade mission to India in 2022 provided the opportunity to establish key education contacts and introduce WA's education strategy.

Minister Templeman will visit India in June with a delegation of WA education, university and training sector representatives to officially launch the collaboration.

The funding boost, announced as part of the 2023-24 State Budget, recognises the importance of international education to WA and will support the growth of the portfolio offshore.

International students who have graduated from an offshore WACE school and choose to study in WA are eligible to apply for the McGowan Government's International Student Accommodation Subsidy and International Student ELICOS Bursary.

As stated by International Education Minister David Templeman:

"Having the high standard of Western Australia's senior secondary education recognised overseas is a great acknowledgment.

"WA has always maintained a strong relationship with India and growing the reputation of our education programs in school communities can support the growth of those people and cultural ties.

"This collaboration positions WA significantly in the international education market and has the potential to support growth in the number of international students pursuing further studies in WA.

"The McGowan Government's ongoing financial commitment to the sector will ensure we support those students when they arrive in WA."

As stated by Education Minister Tony Buti:

"Western Australia's curriculum is world-class and I am delighted that this has been recognised in India.

"Having a collaborative relationship with India can only benefit our State and our education institutions so this is welcome news."
