Scientists from the Heart Research Institute (HRI) were fortunate to receive a visit from eminent US cardiologist and researcher Prof Javed Butler.
Prof Butler, who is President of the Baylor Scott and White Research Institute in Dallas and considered one of the world's experts on heart failure, was in Australia doing a lecture tour.
He took time out of his busy schedule to meet with leading HRI researchers including Assoc Prof Mary Kavurma, Dr Ashish Misra, Dr Chris Stanley, Dr Carmine Gentile, Prof Ben Freedman and his good friend, Prof Andrew Coats.
"Javed has been a good friend of mine for many years," said HRI's CEO and Scientific Director, Prof Coats. "It has been wonderful to welcome him to HRI's facilities to discuss some of our latest research projects and obtain his insights."
Prof Butler is board certified in cardiovascular medicine, advanced heart failure and transplant medicine. His research interests focus on clinical trials in patients with heart failure.
He is also a Distinguished Professor of Medicine at University of Mississippi and chair of the FDA Cardio-Renal Advisory Panel.
"It has been a pleasure to visit HRI to consult with Andrew and learn more about HRI's research projects and capabilities," he said. "I'm very impressed with the range of scope of work being carried out. Some of the projects may have a major impact on patient care in the near future, whereas other projects being done are thinking ahead into the future as to what the advances in science will look like years from now.
"I look forward to seeing significant contributions to science and medicine emanating from HRI."
Prof Butler has authored more than 1,100 peer-reviewed publications and serves on the editorial board of several peer reviewed cardiovascular journals. He has been cited numerous times in America's Best Doctors list.
Born in Pakistan, Prof Butler has earned a swathe of degrees and fellowships including a medical degree from the Aga Khan University in Karachi, residency training at Yale University, cardiology and heart failure and transplant fellowships at Vanderbilt University, and a cardiac imaging fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. At Harvard, he earned a Master of Public Health, and at Emory University, where he directed the Heart Failure Research Program, he received his MBA.
