Melanie Fink on 'The European Union's External Action and International Law'

On 12 June 2020 the ESIL Interest Group 'EU as a Global Actor' and City Law School London organized a Workshop on 'The European Union's External Action and International Law: A View From the Outside'. The event was convened by Jed Odermatt (City Law School) and Ramses A. Wessel (University of Groningen) and was held online.

While the EU's external action has been debated from the 'internal' perspective, especially by EU law experts, there has been less reflection on how the EU and its external action is viewed from the 'outside'. This event explored the 'outside view' understood broadly as opinions and approaches from outside the EU geographically, but also in terms of academic discipline.

Melanie Fink, researcher at the Europa Institute and member of the Coordinating Committee of the ESIL Interest Group 'EU as a Global Actor', chaired one of the five panels of the event. The three speakers-Jörg Polakiewicz (Council of Europe), Cornelia Klocker (University of Konstanz), and Tamás Molnár (European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights)-focused on the EU and International Organizations from various perspectives, in particular the Council of Europe and the United Nations.
