Officer injured - Earlwood

A police officer has been injured after an incident in Sydney's Inner West overnight.

About 10.40pm (Friday 5 February 2021), officers attached to Police Transport Command were conducting proactive patrols as part of an operation targeting anti-social behaviour in the Inner West area, when they noticed a vehicle parked at a reserve on Bayview Terrace at Earlwood.

As four officers approached the sedan from behind, the male driver reversed the vehicle, allegedly striking one of the officers.

An officer discharged one round from his firearm, a fragment of which has struck a second officer in the left forearm.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where it's believed he will undergo surgery to remove the fragment later today (Saturday 6 February 2021).

The 26-year-old driver of the vehicle and his female passenger are assisting police with their inquiries.

A crime scene has been established and investigations are continuing.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
