One dead, two injured after car hits pedestrians at Wollongong

A woman has died and two people remain in hospital after they were struck by a car while they were walking along a footpath at Wollongong overnight.

Emergency services were called to Flinders Street about 10.30pm (Saturday 7 November 2020), and found a 19-year-old woman suffering multiple critical injuries, with two others were also injured.

They were treated at the scene before being taken to Wollongong Hospital, where the woman died a short time later.

An 18-year-old woman remains in hospital being treated for a fractured pelvis while a 21-year-old man has a fractured leg and ribs. A fourth person escaped injury.

Officers from Wollongong Police District have been told a sedan was being driven south along Flinders Street when the driver allegedly lost control, ran off the road and struck the four people who were walking along the footpath.

The driver – a 21-year-old man – was arrested at the scene and has been taken for mandatory testing. Two passengers in the vehicle at the time are assisting with inquiries.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) have examined the scene and are appealing for anyone with information about the incident, or who has dashcam vision, to contact Wollongong Police or the CIU.
