As the holidays approach, Canberrans are being encouraged to shop smart, shop local, and think about both safety and sustainability when buying gifts.
Minister for Consumer Affairs, Shane Rattenbury, said Canberrans could all help keep our city liveable, sustainable, and looking its best.
"Sustainable gifts are better for the environment and are often better for our region too," Minister Rattenbury said.
"Support local traders and businesses, shop smart and consider gifting experiences, rather than items, to reduce waste to landfill."
Smart and sustainable gift ideas include:
- choosing products sourced from the greater Canberra region - buying locally made products reduces waste and emissions from freight, while also supporting our local economy;
- gifting experiences - such as passes to some of Canberra's iconic attractions, a weekend getaway or vouchers for classes;
- gifting nature-based presents - for example, a worm farm or, a potted plant;
- gifting second-hand items - available through op shops or online buy and swap pages;
- or gifting to a family in need and supporting Canberra businesses through the GIVIT Support CBR - Christmas Appeal by buying a voucher or donating online via Connect in Canberra.
Minister Rattenbury also reminded Canberrans to understand their rights as consumers and to be aware of any risks pertaining to purchased products, particularly when buying gifts for children this Christmas.
"When buying toys, it's important to check that the gifts for young children are age appropriate and don't pose a choking hazard.
"You can do this by:
- Making sure the gifts you're giving haven't been recalled or banned by checking the Product Safety website.
- Checking that gifts for young children are age appropriate and don't pose choking hazards. You can use the ACCC choke check tool for help.
- Ensuring all household items with button batteries can't be opened by children and keeping toys with lithium button batteries well away from small children.
