University of Toronto Ranks No. 1 in Canada, 22nd Globally

The University of Toronto has been ranked first in Canada and 22nd globally in the Times Higher EducationWorld University Rankings , a global benchmark for teaching and research excellence.

Among public institutions, U of T ranked 11th in the world and third in North America.

U of T consistently places among the top 25 in the closely watched rankings, which this year assessed nearly 2,300 research-intensive institutions from 118 countries and territories.

"The University of Toronto's sustained success in these rankings speaks to the depth of talent and impact across our community," said President Melanie Woodin. "I am immensely proud of the students, faculty, librarians and staff who are putting us at the forefront of post-secondary research and education in Canada and around the world."

The rankings measure performance across five areas : teaching, research environment, research quality, industry and international outlook. The results draw on reputation surveys, citation data and institutional metrics.

In the overall rankings, the University of Oxford secured the top spot for the 11th consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Stanford University and the University of Cambridge.

U of T, which placed 21st globally in the same rankings last year , was one of three Canadian universities in the top 100 in the 2027 edition of the rankings along with McGill University (43rd) and the University of British Columbia (44th).

U of T continues to be ranked among the top universities globally in the five most influential international rankings: Times Higher Education World University Rankings, QS World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy's Academic Ranking of World Universities, U.S. News & World Report's Best Global Universities and NTU World University Rankings.
