UW Medicine names new leader for hospitals and clinics

Brad Simmons has been named the next president of UW Medicine Hospitals & Clinics and vice president for medical affairs at the University of Washington in Seattle. He will begin his new role with UW Medicine on Aug. 16.

Simmons currently serves as chief administrator, UC Davis Medical Center, and chief operating officer, UC Davis Health Hospital Division. He has previously worked as chief operating officer at Saint Luke's Hospital in Kansas City and senior vice president of medicine, surgical and emergency trauma services at Parkland Health and Hospital System in Dallas.

"Brad is known as a kind and committed leader who is focused on achieving the best outcomes for patients, employees and the community, said Dr. Timothy Dellit, interim CEO at UW Medicine, interim dean of the UW School of Medicine and UW's interim executive vice president for medical affairs. "He recognizes and values the role of academic health systems in providing outstanding clinical care, conducting scientific discovery and training the next generation of healthcare professionals."

"I am thrilled to join the UW Medicine team," Simmons said. "The role of academic medical centers is vital in healthcare, especially in light of the recent pandemic. We must continue to support our communities by providing critical care during a time when all health systems are facing challenges. As we look to the future, we must continue the mission of improving the health of the public, including the most vulnerable. UW Medicine serves a tremendous diversity of communities, and I look forward to ensuring excellence at each and every location."

At UC Davis since 2016, Simmons has been responsible for all inpatient care for UC Davis Health, which includes UC Davis Medical Center and UC Davis Children's Hospital, as well as strategic and business goals, financial performance, quality of care and services, and continuous quality improvement. He earned a master's degree in healthcare administration from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Simmons will succeed Cynthia Dold, who has served as interim president since October 2022. Dold will continue as interim until Simmons arrives and then transition into the role of UW Medicine chief operating officer.
