  • Work is now underway to upgrade the busy intersection of Stock Road and Beeliar Drive in the City of Cockburn.

A construction contract has been awarded to BMD to undertake safety upgrades with works expected to be completed in May 2021.

Safety for riders and walkers accessing the intersection will be prioritised as part of the upgrade, which will see all traffic stopped to enable crossing under fully signalised control.

New lanes will also be constructed on all approaches to the intersection, along with new and extended turning pockets. Traffic signals and street lighting will be upgraded, and safety barriers will be installed on the western corners.

More than 24,000 vehicles per day pass through the busy intersection, with 53 reported crashes in the past five years.

The $7 million project is part of the State Government's fast-tracked package of works post COVID-19 and is funded by the Metropolitan Intersection Crash Program.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"This $7 million upgrade will improve safety at this key southern suburbs intersection for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

"This was part of a program of works we fast-tracked through our State-wide Construction Panel to support the economy through COVID-19.

"These upgrades will complement the range of other major transport upgrades underway in our southern suburbs including the North Lake Road bridge and the METRONET Thornlie-Cockburn Link."

As stated by Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts:

"This important project is being funded through the Road Trauma Trust Account, to improve road safety outcomes.

"Not only will these works improve safety for riders and walkers by giving them exclusive crossing facilities, the new lanes and turning pockets will improve traffic efficiency and safety, reducing the potential for future crashes."

As stated by Cockburn MLA Francis Logan:

"I am so pleased that work has started on upgrades to this notorious intersection.

"This area is well known in my electorate for causing massive traffic build ups and delays.

"The McGowan Government is continuing to deliver for the people of Cockburn."
