A driver believed to have been travelling more than 100km/h over the limit in St Kilda this morning was also found to be drink diving.
Prahran Highway Patrol first spotted the motorist travelling towards the city on Beaconsfield Parade at a fast rate of speed about 1.50am.
The Port Melbourne driver was intercepted by police and arrested for conduct endangering life after exceeding the 60km/h speed limit by more than 100km/h.
He also returned a positive breath test before furnishing an evidentiary breath test reading of .136.
The man's car was impounded, and his licence suspended.
It is expected the 25-years-old man will be charged with conduct endangering life, excessive speed and other traffic related offences.
Prahran Highway Patrol Senior Constable Tyson Kosmina said the motorists driving was just beyond belief.
"I'm gobsmacked," SC Kosmina said.
"The fact he was driving at that speed with other traffic around is bad enough but to be more than two and a half times over the limit is unbelievable.
"This was a fatal collision in the making and I am so glad we were able to prevent that from happening."
This arrest forms part of Operation Compass, a road policing operation aimed at keeping the community safe on Victorian roads.

This includes behaviour such as speeding, drink and drug driving, people not wearing seatbelts, mobile phone use and fatigue.
