FAU Doctoral Candidate Nora Gourmelon Named AI Newcomer of 2023

The German Informatics Society has chosen the 10 AI newcomers of 2023, and one of them is Nora Gourmelon from FAU's Chair of Computer Science 5 (Pattern Recognition). She has been recognized for her work in the area of natural and life sciences, in particular due to her innovative and interdisciplinary approach. Nora Gourmelon describes the focus of her research as follows: "Just imagine standing at a glacier, a huge mass of blue ice stretching almost as far as the eye can see. With my research, I am making at least a small contribution toward protecting such natural wonders." The FAU doctoral candidate is based at the Pattern Recognition Lab, where she carries out research into "green artificial intelligence (AI)". In our interview, Nora Gourmelon describes how "green AI" can improve climate models and the contribution her work is making to this field.

The total of 10 newcomers were selected partly on the basis of public online voting and partly by an expert jury, including former award winners.
