Free electronic waste drop off is back for 2022

Hobsons Bay residents with mobile phones, televisions, appliances and cables to recycle can drop-off their electronic waste (e-waste) for free in Altona on Saturday 5 March.

Council's annual e-waste event is a great opportunity to cleanse households of unwanted electronics while ensuring toxic materials are kept out of landfill and valuable resources are recycled and recovered.

Mayor of Hobsons Bay Cr Peter Hemphill encouraged residents to take up the opportunity to dispose of their household goods in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

"From 1 July 2019, all e-waste was banned from Victorian landfills, which means that e-waste cannot go into any household bins," said Cr Hemphill.

"An event like the e-waste drop-off will ensure appliances that are collected can be sorted and dismantled for recycling – reducing the burden on landfill and giving many items an opportunity to be repurposed."

Household quantities of small to medium sized electronic appliances are accepted. This includes:

  • Mobile phones and tablets
  • Televisions, computers and computer accessories
  • Toasters, kettles, and microwaves
  • Cables, chargers, and power boards

Items not accepted include batteries, light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, barbecues, televisions with broken glass and hazardous waste.

Electronic items collected with data storage capacity will be securely erased.

The free e-waste drop-off will run on Saturday 5 March from 8am to 3pm at Council's Operations Centre, Sugar Gum Drive, Altona. Proof of vaccination or eligible exemption is a condition of entry.

With community safety in mind, the e-waste drop off event is drive-through and contactless, supported by a COVIDSafe plan. Traffic managers will direct residents in their vehicles to the drop off location inside the Operations Centre, where once stationary, a team of recyclers will remove the e-waste for residents.

The service is free for Hobsons Bay residents and a booking is not required. For a full list of accepted items, visit www.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/e-waste
