Australia's Chief Scientist Tony Haymet will deliver the keynote speech at a national conference this month exploring how data is transforming ocean science and decision-making across Australia's marine and offshore sectors.
The Oceans of Data Conference will be held at The University Club of Western Australia on Monday 25 May, showcasing the latest advances in ocean observation, modelling and analytics, and their real-world applications.
Professor Haymet is an internationally renowned oceanographer, with an extensive career spanning senior leadership roles at CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. His work has shaped global understanding of the oceans and driven innovation in marine technology, including the development of autonomous ocean-observing systems.
Director of the TIDE Research Hub, part of the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Program, Professor Phil Watson said the event would connect leading researchers with industry experts and government representatives.
"This conference offers an important opportunity to examine how data-enabled innovation is reshaping ocean science, engineering and decision-making across Australia's marine and offshore industries," he said.
The one-day event will also feature keynote contributions from Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte, New South Wales Chief Scientist and Engineer, and expert insights from Michelle Heupel, Executive Director of the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS).
The conference reflects growing recognition that data-driven approaches are critical to addressing complex challenges in marine environments, from climate change and ecosystem management to offshore engineering and resource development.
The program will highlight interdisciplinary research and innovation across oceanography, engineering, data science, machine learning and statistics, with a strong emphasis on practical applications relevant to industry and government.
Attendees can expect discussions on emerging technologies, new analytical approaches and opportunities for collaboration, as well as networking with peers and leaders from across Australia's marine and data sectors. Hosted by UWA's Oceans Institute, Data Institute and TIDE Research Hub, the conference aims to strengthen connections between research, policy and industry, and help position Australia at the forefront of data-enabled ocean innovation.
