NTCS Protected Industrial Action - Statement from Commissioner Matthew Varley

NT Government

Stoppage of work for 12 hours durationDarwin and Alice Spring Correctional facilities

NT Correctional Officers, who are members of the United Workers Union (UWU), will stage a 12-hour work stoppage at the Darwin Correctional Centre on Monday 2 May 2022 and at the Alice Springs Correctional Centre on Thursday 5 May 2022 as part of a Protected Industrial Action (PIA).

The action is part of ongoing Enterprise Agreement negotiations between the Office of the Commissioner for Public Employment (OCPE), NT Correctional Services (NTCS) and the UWU.

NT Correctional Services acknowledges the right of union members to take industrial action and continues to work with the union and their delegates to ensure the safe and secure operation of all custodial facilities.

NT Correctional Services' top priority is the security, safety and wellbeing of all prisoners, employees and the wider community.

NT Correctional Services has undertaken extensive contingency planning for both events.

Routine operations within the Darwin and Alice Springs custodial facilities will be impacted by these 12 hour work stoppages, however NT Correctional Services will have sufficient staff on duty to ensure the security and safety of prisoners and staff at all times.

Both facilities will operate a restricted regime for the duration of the action, however social visits will not be affected as the action occurs on days when social visits are not scheduled.

Professional visits at Darwin will not be affected as the action occurs on a date when professional visits are not scheduled.

Professional visits will be suspended on 5 May at Alice Springs Correctional Centre.

Core functions including the delivery of meals, the administering of medication and attending to the medical needs of prisoners will continue.

NT Correctional Services is continuing to work with United Workers Union to ensure the safe and secure operation of all correctional facilities. I thank union representatives for their engagement so far.

Matthew Varley,

Commissioner, NT Correctional Services
