Peel Health Campus redevelopment proposal received

  • Proposal from Ramsay Health Care to redevelop Peel Health Campus
  • State Government will assess a variety of options to meet growth in demand
  • Peel-Murray region highlighted as a pressure point in the Sustainable Health Review
  • The McGowan Government has received a proposal from Ramsay Health Care to redevelop the Peel Health Campus. The proposal, from the current private operator, contemplates a significant contribution from the State Government.

The McGowan Government will assess all the options to ensure the future healthcare demands in the Peel-Murray region can be met.

Ramsay Health Care currently manages the 206-bed Peel Health Campus under a service agreement with the South Metropolitan Health Service for the State Government.

A key strategy in the McGowan Government's Sustainable Health Review is to drive safety, quality and value through transparency, funding and planning. The South Metropolitan Health Service has commenced an integrated planning process to meet future growth in demand for services.

The Sustainable Health Review specifically highlighted the Peel-Murray region as a pressure point. High population growth coupled with an ageing population is expected to drive an increase in demand for health services in the area.

Since coming into government, the McGowan Government has provided $10 million to develop infrastructure for public health and mental health services in the Peel-Murray region.

This includes a $5 million upgrade to the Peel Health Campus emergency department, with construction work to recommence later this month.

The Commonwealth Government has also committed $25 million as part of its Community Health and Hospitals Program commencing 2020-21. This will build on the McGowan Government's investment.

As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:

"I thank our partners at Ramsay Health Care for their proposal and their commitment to the Peel-Murray region.

"The demand for health services in this region continues to grow and the McGowan Government is working to address this.

"Since coming into government, we have invested $10 million in developing and maintaining the infrastructure at Peel Health Campus to help improve the health and wellbeing of residents in Peel and Murray-Wellington.

"Works on the expansion and upgrade of the emergency department, which are recommencing after being paused for COVID-19, will ensure the Peel Health Campus can continue to deliver hospital services to the Peel region and is able to respond to the needs of the growing local community."

As stated by Mandurah MLA David Templeman:

"People in the region have benefited from the McGowan Government's $10 million investment in services.

"I have been working hard to see the Peel Health Campus upgraded and with work on the emergency department upgrades starting soon, services will be greatly improved for people in Mandurah."

As stated by Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke:

"The current upgrade will significantly improve the emergency department for people living in this district.

"We know demand for health services is continuing to grow. The McGowan Government is continuing to invest and assess a variety of options to meet this demand."
