Police charge man after assaulting police officer at Tamworth

A man has been charged after assaulting a police officer in the state's north east.

About 1.15am yesterday (Monday 29 June 2020), officers attached to Oxley Police District attended a service station on Marius Street, Tamworth, following reports of an intoxicated person causing problems.

After speaking with the 40-year-old man, officers gave him a lift home.

Upon arrival, officers opened the caged truck and the man allegedly jumped out and punched a leading senior constable in the face.

It's alleged the man then resisted arrest and fought the officers.

OC spray was deployed and the man was subdued and taken to Tamworth Police Station.

The leading senior constable was treated by NSW Ambulance officers for minor injuries.

The man was charged with two counts of resist officer in execution of duty, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm and possess prohibited drug.

He was given a future court attendance notice to appear at Tamworth Local Court on Monday 17 August 2020.
