PSOs mark decade keeping public transport travellers safe

Victoria's first batch of transit protective services officers are reuniting to mark 10 years since their deployment to the public transport network.

The inaugural PSO squad - comprising 18 officers - conducted their first patrols at Flinders Street and Southern Cross railway stations on 22 February, 2012.

There are now around 1250 PSOs in Victoria Police's ranks.

Members of the original PSO squad - wearing white shirts from their early uniform - will today join newer recruits for a commemorative patrol.

They will walk the platform at Flinders Street Railway Station.

Of the first 18 PSOs two are now PSO sergeants and four are senior PSOs. Nine have become police officers - working in areas such as general duties, highway patrol and Victoria Police's Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team.

One has retired and another works in law enforcement elsewhere.

The role of PSOs has evolved over the last decade, with their duties recently including assisting with Victoria Police's response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

They remain a crucial part of the state's hotel quarantine program through Operation Tidewatch.

PSOs were initially confined to the public transport network but can now be deployed to shopping centres, sporting precincts and highly-populated areas to help prevent crime and support community safety.

They can also be called upon during natural disasters and emergencies such as bushfires and floods.

PSOs are based at more than 200 railway stations statewide from 6pm until the last train plus across the weekend as part of the Night Network.

PSOs in Victoria Police's Protective Services Unit have been deployed to government buildings including the courts and parliament since 1988.

Quotes attributable to Assistant Commissioner Transit and Public Safety Command Dean McWhirter:

"Over the last 10 years the role of PSOs has evolved but their focus on keeping Victorians safe remains steadfast.

"Each and every day they play a critical role on the rail network and beyond.

"Today we recognise their outstanding effort and dedication and look forward to their continued contribution to Victoria Police."
