Search for missing spear fisherman in Innisfail, QLD

Officers from the Far North District Water Police are coordinating a search for a man missing in waters to the north of Innisfail, Queensland Police say.

The 35-year-old Cairns man was spear fishing alone in waters between Palmer Point and High Island, north of Innisfail yesterday (Saturday, March 18, 2017).

Around 6pm the man’s unoccupied aluminium dingy was located anchored off Palmer Point. A preliminary check of the area located a spear gun floating nearby.

A search was commenced last evening involving the Rescue 510 helicopter, private vessels already in the general area, Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) and Innisfail Police.

An air and sea search will continue this morning with Water Police, VMR vessels and a helicopter. Police divers from Brisbane will also travel to the search area.
