Sixth revision of European Code for Inland Waterways released

Harmonized traffic regulations are key to ensuring navigation safety on inland waterways. The European Code for Inland Waterways (CEVNI), adopted in 1985, provides general provisions for vessels, boatmasters and crew members, marks and draught scales on vessels, visual signals, sound signals and radiotelephony, waterway signs and markings, rules of the road, berthing rules, signalling and reporting requirements as well as prevention of pollution of water and disposal of waste. These harmonized rules constitute the legal and technical basis for national inland waterway codes in UNECE member States.

The sixth edition released today takes into account best practices from traffic regulations of UNECE member States and River Commissions, other resolutions, such as resolution No. 90, "European Code for Signs and Signals on Inland Waterways" (SIGNI), the Recommendations on Harmonized Europe-Wide Technical Requirements for Inland Navigation Vessels (resolution No. 61), the Recommendation on electronic chart display and information system for inland navigation (resolution No. 48), standards adopted by the European committee for drawing up standards in the field of inland navigation and new developments in the sector.

It contains the updated provisions for the list of documents to be present on board an inland waterway vessel, the stability of vessels carrying containers, vessels using liquefied natural gas as a fuel, navigation by radar, radiotelephony, information and navigation devices, reporting requirements, prevention of pollution of water from inland waterway vessels and other updates.
