Supreme Court Judge Takes Corruption Watchdog Role

  • Justice Stephen Hall named Deputy Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission
  • His Honour served as a Supreme Court judge for 17 years, most recently as an appeal Judge

The Honourable Justice Stephen Hall has been appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) of Western Australia.

Justice Hall joins the CCC full-time after more than 40 years as a Judge and counsel.

His Honour fills the vacancy left by the Honourable Michael Corboy SC, who served as Deputy Commissioner and interim Commissioner before his appointment as Commissioner in November 2025.

Justice Hall sat as a trial judge of the WA Supreme Court's General Division from 2009 to 2022 and as a Court of Appeal Judge in the ensuing period. He will retire from the bench at the end of this month to take up his new role.

As a Judge of appeal, his Honour was responsible for determining appeals of decisions from the Supreme Court, State Administrative Tribunal, WA Family Court, and WA District Court.

As a trial Judge, he presided in over 100 criminal and civil trials including the Judge-alone trial of Claremont killer Bradley Edwards as well as other homicide, armed robbery, arson, sex offending, fraud, insider trading, and drugs cases.

Justice Hall joined the WA independent bar in 1999 and appeared as counsel in multiple complex trials and appeals in criminal and civil cases. He was appointed senior counsel in 2003.

At the bar, his Honour was appointed as counsel assisting the CCC on several occasions, as counsel assisting the Royal Commission into the Finance Broking Industry and counsel assisting the Police Royal Commission.

Before this, he was a Senior Assistant Director in the Perth Office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, where he worked for 13 years.

Justice Hall commences his five-year term as CCC Deputy Commissioner on 1 July.

As stated by Attorney General Dr Tony Buti:

"I congratulate Justice Stephen Hall on his appointment as Deputy Commissioner of the Corruption and Crime Commission.

"His Honour's distinguished service in the legal profession as a Supreme Court Judge, a barrister, and a prosecutor across four decades makes him eminently qualified for his new role.

"Justice Hall's extensive experience in handling complex trial matters will enhance the CCC's ability to investigate allegations of serious misconduct and corruption in the State's public sector."
