UWA ranked top in Australia in five STEM subjects

The University of Western Australia has achieved the highest ranking among all Australian universities for five STEM subjects, according to the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by Subject.

UWA achieved the top rank in Australia in Mining and Mineral Engineering, Marine/Ocean Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Biological Sciences.

The University also achieved rankings in the top 50 in the world for 11 subjects, and topped the State with the most subjects featured in the rankings, as well as the largest number in the top 50 and top 100.

Subjects ranked in the top 50 globally include Mining and Mineral Engineering (4th globally), Marine/Ocean Engineering (5), Agricultural Sciences (17), Environmental Science and Engineering (21), Oceanography (22), Clinical Medicine (29), Human Biological Sciences (33), Biological Sciences (34), Water Resources (46), Ecology (47) and Earth Sciences (50).

UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander AO said the strong results demonstrated the University's strength and depth in research and teaching excellence.

"These results highlight the excellence of our academic teachers and researchers, and in particular our strength in STEM disciplines," Professor den Hollander said.

The rankings are compiled by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, an independent organisation dedicated to research in higher education intelligence and consultation. It is considered the preeminent global rankings system.
