Victorian Heart Foundation Walking groups resume

Victorian Heart Foundation Walking groups will resume their steps from Saturday 20 June as COVID-19 restrictions ease. Today Minister for Roads, The Hon. Jaala Pulford joined Heart Foundation CEO Victoria, Kellie-Ann Jolly to 'step out' with Melton's Heart Foundation walkers for the first time.

Heart Foundation CEO Victoria, Kellie-Ann Jolly, comment:

"We welcome Heart Foundation Walking groups as they resume their regular walking activities since COVID-19 restrictions came into effect in Victoria.

"While social distancing remains important, we're delighted to join Heart Foundation Melton Library Walkers today as they step out together for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

"For Melton residents and many Victorians, living in lockdown has sharply highlighted the importance of safe, connected streets and open green spaces that encourage and support healthy activity.

"This pandemic presents a unique opportunity to improve liveability across local communities like Melton. Now more than ever, building walking infrastructure that is safe, pedestrian-friendly and supports physical distancing is crucial.

"We welcome the leadership shown by the Victorian State Government as they work towards delivering a Pedestrian Strategy that supports people to increase their physical activity.

"Walking is a free tonic for good heart health. Being physically active at least 30 minutes on most days helps reduce risks like high blood pressure, cholesterol or weight issues that can lead to heart disease, Australia's single biggest killer.

"With more than four in five Victorians not active enough for good health, a whole-of-government approach is vital and investment is needed that boosts active living, supports jobs and takes steps to future-proof a healthier, urban environment.

"We have worked tirelessly to encourage people off the couch and to get moving through Heart Foundation Walking, Australia's largest walking community, since it was first established in 1995.

"We welcome the opportunity to continue to work with local and state governments to promote walking and active living across our neighbourhoods."
