The AI Centre for Value Based Healthcare (AIC), led by King's College London and Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, will partner with the University of Cambridge and other NHS Trusts, to drive innovation in healthcare AI using the University of Cambridge's newly-launched Zenith AI Supercomputer.
Officially unveiled during a visit by James Frith MP, Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology, the Cambridge Zenith AI Supercomputer is now the UK's largest AI-for-science platform with its launch marking a significant strengthening of national artificial intelligence capability.
Working in partnership with the University of Cambridge, Cambridge University Hospitals and other NHS trusts, the AI Centre will harness Zenith's computing power to accelerate the development of next-generation AI healthcare tools including predictive analytics, diagnostics and personalised medicine. Cancer research, through the MOSAIC (Multimodal Oncology Sovereign AI Collaboration) programme, will also be a key focus area for the collaboration.
"This collaboration provides an important opportunity to connect the NHS to national-scale infrastructure - enabling the development of NHS cancer foundation models using data from leading NHS Trusts alongside the Zenith Supercomputer's powerful processing capabilities."
Dr Joe Zhang, Chief Technology Officer, OneLondon and the AI Centre for Value Based Healthcare
The programme aims to create an independent NHS UK sovereign AI asset that is adaptable to multiple clinical applications including improving cancer diagnosis, supported treatment selection, enhanced outcomes prediction and wider development of new therapeutics. Importantly, these tools will be designed for deployment within the NHS, ensuring they deliver direct benefits to patients and clinicians while ensuring secure national control over sensitive health data.
The Zenith AI Supercomputer's launch brought together leaders from across government, academia and healthcare. For the AI Centre, the partnership reinforces a commitment to cross-sector collaboration to bridge the gap between research and frontline healthcare delivery in developing tools that improve care quality and system efficiency.
As the UK continues to invest in AI as a driver of both economic growth and public sector transformation, initiatives like the Cambridge Zenith AI Supercomputer are expected to play a central role. In this strategic environment, the AI Centre's collaboration with Cambridge represents a shared vision: to responsibly harness AI at scale, develop sovereign capabilities within the UK and deliver tangible improvements in patient experiences and outcomes.
"This partnership is a unique opportunity to combine world-class computing infrastructure with strong NHS and academic partnerships between King's College London and Cambridge to progress a new wave of AI-enabled healthcare innovations. I am excited to see the AI Centre harness Zenith's power to explore how advanced AI can be embedded into healthcare systems safely and effectively, and translated into benefits for patients, clinicians and communities across the UK."
