Former Australian chess champ visits Mount Martha House Community Centre

Members of the Mount Martha Chess Club hosted a very special guest, former Australian Chess Champion, Doug Hamilton at the simultaneous Chess exhibition at Mount Martha House Community Centre on Monday 29 April.

The players were delighted to be given the opportunity to play against someone of such high calibre. Doug Hamilton played two games simultaneously against each of the players and was impressed with the level of play.

This is the fourth time he has visited with another trip planned for next year.

Bruce Hesketh from the Club (former Olympian at the 1992 Papua New Guinea Olympics) was absolutely thrilled to play against Doug Hamilton.

Bruce said he brought a sense of excitement to the game the other players in such a beautiful setting.

"We are a friendly chess club, we welcome players of all ages and strengths".

The group meet at Mount Martha House every Monday afternoon to challenge each other to a game and enjoy some quality social time.

Mount Martha House Community Centre is a newly refurbished heritage building available for community and commercial groups to hire for workshops, meetings, classes, functions.

The building is fully air conditioned with an overhead projector and screen available in the board room, hall and kitchen. There is also a dedicated art space available to hire and ample parking – all a short stroll to Mount Martha village.

The Term 2 program includes a range of community activities such as:

  • Community Playgroup for Parents, Grandparents and Carers held every Tuesday and Thursday
  • After School Art and Craft and Photography classes
  • Emotional Resilience and Mindfulness for Children and Teenagers
  • Languages
  • Painting, Art and Craft classes for adults
  • Tours of Mount Martha House and the Model Railway

Many classes are offered on Saturdays or during the evening catering for adults, teenagers and children.

Mount Martha House Community Programs are supported by Mornington Peninsula Shire and Department of Health & Human Services through the Neighbourhood House Coordination Program.
