Logan City Council's popular city-wide immunisation program has been further boosted by a grant from the State Government.
Record numbers of people have attended Council's community immunisation clinics since concerns about the possible impacts of COVID-19 first emerged five months ago.
From January to May more than 6500 shots for various vaccine-preventable diseases including influenza, measles, chicken pox and hepatitis were administered by Council's highly-trained immunisation nurses.
This included a peak of 2849 vaccines administered in April, mostly flu shots.
The State Government has recognised the importance of the immunisation program to the Logan community and has provided a $211,222 grant through Queensland Health's Community Services Fund to help offset the costs incurred by Council from the record activity while implementing strict social distancing and hygiene measures.
Logan City Council Mayor Darren Power said it was critical that Council's immunisation and flu vaccination programs continue to be delivered to the Logan community during the pandemic response and recovery.
"This grant is helping to keep Logan residents of all ages healthy and safe in these challenging times," Cr Power said.
"With winter only just started and the flu season still ahead, I urge everyone who lives and works in Logan to take advantage of this important Council health service."
Influenza vaccinations are free for:
- all persons aged 65 years and over
- all pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
- all children aged six months to less than five years
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (aged six months and over)
- People with medical conditions such as severe asthma and diabetes may also be eligible
For those not eligible for free immunisation, an adult flu shot costs $10.
Council's School Immunisation Program gives parents the opportunity to have their child vaccinated for free at school.
Year 7 students are offered vaccination to protect against:
- Human papillomavirus
- Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (Whooping Cough).
Year 10 students are offered vaccination to protect against:
- Meningococcal ACYW.
Logan City Council's mobile immunisation clinics are held weekly at 11 locations across the city.
They are: Beenleigh Library, Browns Plains Early Years Centre, Crestmead PCYC, Flagstone State School, Greenbank State School, Jimboomba Library, Logan Central Library, Logan Hyperdome Library, Marsden Library, Springwood Chuild Health and Yarrabilba Family and Community Place.
Social distancing rules apply at all clinics and people are urged not to attend if they are feeling unwell.
