Australians from Uganda mark 50 Years since the expulsion of 50,000 Asians of Indian origin from Uganda by former Dictator Idi Amin Dada in 1972.

Chairman and Members of Australians from Uganda 50 Years On Steering Committee cordially invite you to attend the event which is being held at the National Australian Maritime Museum on Friday 7th October 2022 at 6.00 pm.

Dr Ashak Nathwani AM remembers what is felt like to arrive in Sydney, penniless, and homeless. He was not alone. Over 50,000 Ugandan Asians of Indian descent were expelled from Uganda. Made stateless, with one decree from former dictator Idi Amin Dada, this group who had called Uganda home had to flee for their lives. Some went to Canada, others Great Britain. A few thousand made their way to Australia.

On October 7, the Australians from Uganda community and invited guests are marking the 50th anniversary since their arrival. Witnesses will articulate why they chose to come to Australia, the difficulties of leaving their home in Uganda, who assisted them during their early settlement period, and the contributions they have made over the fifty years to the country they now call home.

The event will also mark fifty years of the 'formal' birth of 'multiculturalism' with the appointment of a Federal Minister for this portfolio in 1972 – a year after the White Australia Policy was abolished. Asians from Uganda were the first group from a non-European country to come to Australia.

A limited-edition book will also be launched on the night titled "50 Year Journey - Australians from Uganda - Tales of Trials, Tribulations and Triumphs
