Police charge pair after firearm seized after Port Melbourne collision

Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged two people after a collision in Port Melbourne led to the discovery of a loaded firearm last night.

Emergency services were called to reports of the three-vehicle collision on Todd Road near the Salmon Street Bridge about 7pm.

It is alleged a blue Hyundai sedan was stationary, near the emergency lane, when a collision occurred with a merging grey Holden station wagon.

The occupants of the Hyundai sedan fled from the scene.

A knife and firearm were located inside the Hyundai and police arrested a man and a woman at a nearby bus stop.

A 27-year-old Mernda man has been charged with prohibited person possess firearm, possess a controlled weapon, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and drive whilst disqualified.

He has been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 27 April.

A 25-year-old Roxburgh Park woman has been charged with prohibited person possess firearm, possess a controlled weapon, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and unlicensed driving.

She will appear at court at a later date.
