Central Goldfields Shire Council will partner with The Maryborough District Advertiser and local businesses to help support our local business community as part of the 2020 Christmas Shopping Promotion.

In August 2020, Council began working with businesses and stakeholders in High Street and Nolan Street Maryborough to aid the economic recovery from COVID-19 - under the banner Jump Start High Street.

As part of the Jump Start project a Mainstreet Action Plan was established to build a precinct-wide strategy and identify implementable actions, which have support and funding from Council.

The Christmas Shopping Promotion has been identified as one of those actions.

Central Goldfields Shire Chief Administrator Noel Harvey said it was more important than ever to support local businesses by shopping local this Christmas.

"The Christmas Shopping Promotion has run in the Central Goldfields for more than 20 years but will be even bigger and better in 2020.

"With Council's participation in the promotion this year, it means the ability for businesses to participate is increased.

'With over 90 percent of the businesses operating in Central Goldfields Shire being small business, with local owners, it is more important than ever that as a community we choose to go local first as we continue our recovery from the economic effects of Covid-19.

"It makes sense that, when we can, the preference for all us is to support local business. When we spend locally the money stays local. These are the businesses that the community call on for support, sponsorship and jobs. Buying locally is an investment in the future of the Central Goldfields Shire economy."

The Mainstreet Action Plan has also identified two other actions that Council is now actively working on in collaboration with the Jump Start committee members.

A Green The Street project, will see Council plant out key areas in High Street and Nolan Street. This project has now started and will continue over the coming months.

The third action will focus on precinct activation and encourage our community to spend more time in the High Street Nolan Street area.
