Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery and Planning Minister Rita Saffioti today outlined the scope for extensive works at Kiara College.
The $20.7 million commitment comprises 12 hectares of land being transferred to the college for its farm program and the college receiving new facilities, alterations and refurbishments.
The upgrades include a state-of-the-art performing arts centre and new covered outdoor playing courts to enhance the college's specialist basketball program.
In addition to the new facilities, the college will also receive alterations and refurbishments to the existing medical centre, physical education staff room, home economics studios and improvement of the acoustics in the existing music rooms.
There will also be upgrades to the external facades of some buildings to refresh the overall look of the college. An onsite carpark is included in the works and will provide an additional 23 car spaces.
Designs have recently been completed for the new buildings and upgrades and works are expected to begin towards the end of the year.
The State Government is investing $452.8 million over this financial year to improve infrastructure in public schools and create jobs.
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
"This $20.7 million investment will provide Kiara College with modern upgrades and state-of-the-art new facilities.
"The school has been involved in the design and planning process to make sure this investment is spent on areas of the college that will best support students and staff.
"Kiara College is a unique secondary school that also provides specialist agriculture and basketball programs."
As stated by Planning Minister Rita Saffioti:
"We made an election commitment to secure the future of Kiara College's farm school and to invest in further upgrades to other school facilities such as a new performing arts centre and other refurbishments.
"The McGowan Government will transfer 12 hectares of WA Planning Commission owned land to the college to help deliver our election commitment for Kiara College to accommodate its specialist agricultural program, while the upgrades are set to start this year."
As stated by Bassendean MLA Dave Kelly:
"It is incredible that Kiara College can provide an award-winning agriculture program so close to the city.
"The transfer of land will secure the farm schools tenure and allow Kiara College to continue to deliver its excellent program.
"The new upgrades will also allow an enhanced learning environment for students in a range of subjects."
