Professor Roland Stocker, leader of the Arterial Inflammation and Redox Biology Group at HRI, has been awarded the 2021 Basic Science Award from the esteemed Society for Free Radical Research-Europe.
As recipient of this prestigious award, Prof Stocker was invited to give the keynote lecture on 'Arterial redox signalling in the control of blood pressure' at the Society's international flagship conference. The lecture encompassed a life-body of work by Prof Stocker since he first coined the concept back in 1987, at the start of his career.
Well established since 1982, the Society for Free Radical Research has regional branches and some 2,500 members around the world to advance knowledge and education in free radical processes, with a focus on industrial and medical importance to benefit the public. The Society for Free Radical Research-Europe promotes a variety of research and offers prizes for areas of research, with the Basic Science Award received by Prof Stocker being awarded to prominent scientists recognised for their key scientific achievements in the field of free radical research or a field with the potential for "cross-fertilisation" with free radical research.
"This research has been quite a collaborative project, and I couldn't have done it without my past and present laboratory members and the various funding bodies who have provided support along the way," says Prof Stocker.
Prof Stocker is especially grateful to the National Health & Medical Research Council of Australia for continuous funding of his research over the last three decades.
This research by Prof Stocker and his current and past lab members has produced a significant number of high-profile papers, and part of the work is ongoing under the Microvascular Research Unit at HRI led by Dr Christopher Stanley.
