Serious bicycle crash on Tasman Bridge bike path

A 46 year old female cyclist has been seriously injured in a bicycle crash on the Tasman Bridge bike path this morning.

Police and emergency services remain on the scene on the Tasman Bridge near Montagu Bay end. The woman has been taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a serious condition suffering head injuries.

Inspector Brett Berry said that the crash did not involve another vehicle or person.

"Early investigations suggest that the woman was riding her bicycle on the northern side of the Tasman Bridge east bound about 9.50am when she appeared to hit part of the bridge and fell from her bike onto the track," he said.

"The woman was wearing a helmet at the time. At this stage it appears to be an unfortunate accident and is not suspicious.

"Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing. Anyone with information or dash cam should contact Bellerive Police on 131444 or report anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestopperstas.com.au."

Motorists are advised to travel via the Bowen Bridge until further notice while the traffic clears.
