U of T Tops Canada, 20th Worldwide in U.S. News Rankings

The University of Toronto has been ranked first in Canada and 20th in the world in U.S. News & World Report's latest Best Global Universities Rankings - a result that places it among the world's top universities for research.

Among public institutions, U of T ranked even higher - 11th globally and fourth in North America behind the University of California, Berkeley; University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Washington - in the 2026-27 edition of the U.S. media company's annual ranking , released this week.

U of T's overall results were powered by top 10 performances in an array of health- and medicine-related subjects, as well as in arts and humanities.

"This ranking reflects what I see every day across the University of Toronto's three campuses: students, faculty, staff and librarians asking big, ambitious questions - and, through their academic excellence, finding compelling answers," said U of T President Melanie Woodin.

"Our consistently strong global performance as a research university is a product of their outstanding curiosity, ambition and dedication."

U.S. News & World Report evaluates universities based solely on academic research and reputation, drawing on data from Clarivate Analytics across 13 indicators - from citation impact and research reputation to international collaboration. More than 2,250 universities from around the world were ranked this year.

U of T's breadth of research excellence is reflected in U.S. News & World Report's individual subject rankings, where the university placed in the top 10 globally in nine subjects. They are: surgery (fourth); radiology, nuclear medicine and medical imaging (fourth); arts and humanities (fifth); social sciences and public health (fifth); endocrinology and metabolism (fifth); cardiac and cardiovascular systems (sixth); clinical medicine (sixth); oncology (ninth); and psychiatry/psychology (10th).

U of T has consistently placed in the top 20 globally in the U.S. News & World Report ranking over the past five years, climbing as high as 16th globally in both 2021 and 2025.

The top five spots in this year's overall ranking went to Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge, unchanged from last year. Two other Canadian universities joined U of T in the top 100 this year: the University of British Columbia (42nd) and McGill University (68th).

Overall, U of T continues to be ranked among the top 35 universities globally across the five most prominent international rankings: QS World University Rankings, U.S. News & World Report's Best Global Universities, Times Higher Education's World University Rankings, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy's Academic Ranking of World Universities and National Taiwan University World University Rankings.
