Unprecedented number of applications for DTU study programmes

DTU has received significantly more applications this year, and there has also been an increase in applicants listing a DTU study programme as their first priority.

The number of quota 1 applications for DTU has increased by nine per cent over last year, from 7,657 to 8,376. And this year, more applicants also have a DTU study programme at the top of their list. 2,955 applicants have thus prioritized a BSc or BEng programme at DTU, compared to 2,827 in 2019.

Again this year, the English-language BSc in General Engineering is the programme that attracts the most applicants. DTU has received a total of 515 applications for this programme, of which 271 are first priorities.

Other popular BSc programmes are Software Technology and Artificial Intelligence and Data, but the Design and Innovation, Chemistry and Technology as well as Mechanical Engineering programmes also attract many applicants.

In total, the BSc programme has seen 16 per cent more applications this year, whereas the number of applicants for the BEng programme is roughly equivalent to 2019. The most popular BEng programmes are Civil Engineering and Software Technology.

More student places

This year, DTU may admit 330 new students more than last year, because the Danish Parliament recently decided to award additional grants to higher education programmes due to the corona situation. The additional places are allotted as 265 for the BSc programmes and 65 for the BEng programmes.

It is too early to say whether this expansion will match the applications. However, it appears that DTU—again this year—will have to reject qualified applicants for the most popular programmes, whereas an increasing number of programmes will probably see vacant places in August.

"We are pleased to note that more young people have applied for engineering programmes this year, not just at DTU, but throughout the country. At national level, MSc Eng and BEng are number four and five, respectively, on the list of most popular programmes in Denmark. This is an extremely positive development, because the world desperately needs engineers to drive the development towards more sustainable solutions for the major issues facing society," says Lars D. Christoffersen, Dean of Undergraduate Studies at DTU.

Applicants will receive their reply on 28 July 2020.
