Wanted man charged with firearm offences at Newcastle

A man, wanted on outstanding warrants, has been charged after allegedly being caught with a firearm at licensed premises in Newcastle.

Police were called to a hotel on Maitland Road, Mayfield, about 8.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 16 June 2020), after receiving information a man with outstanding warrants was there.

Officers from Newcastle City Target Action Group (TAG) attended and arrested a 31-year-old man.

When the man's backpack was searched, police allegedly found a sawn-off firearm and several rounds of ammunition.

He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with possess unregistered firearm –prohibited firearm, possess shortened firearm without authority, not keep firearm safely – prohibited firearm, and possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority. The two outstanding warrants were also executed.

The man has been refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court today (Wednesday 17 June 2020).
