AMA considers paracetamol rescheduling

Australian Medical Association

Balance the key to ensuring access to paracetamol while ensuring potential harms are limited.

The AMA last week provided a submission to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) consultation on amendments to the poisons standards in relation to paracetamol.

The AMA submission stresses the AMA's support for limiting the harm from medicines misuse, but also notes the challenges in finding the right balance between limiting harm from overdose and guaranteeing access for people who need paracetamol. Paracetamol provides an important therapeutic purpose in Australia. It is therefore important that the risk from paracetamol use is not overstated, undermining the consumer confidence in its safety.
